Fancy glass windows and doors are pretty standard in most households these days. Glass windows and doors are installed since they increase the beauty, lighting, and adds class to any building structure. And the good news is, with the right glass pane you can also prevent noise, high wind, dust, rain, etc. from causing damage to your home sweet home.
Currently, the talk of the town is double glazed glass. Double glazed glass is a type of insulated glass that consists of two or more glass window panes separated by a vacuum or gas-filled space. It has gained popularity because it is beneficial in a lot of ways and is energy-efficient too. People chose double glazed glass over single glass panes not only for comfort but also for safety. Listed Building Double Glazing is also a common phenomenon that is slowly catching up.
How is Double Glazing Done?
A window with double glass panes put in parallel is called double glazing. In a frame of uPVC, aluminum, or timber, an insulated glass unit (IGU) is sited. It is considered as the main component of the glass unit. Then, the two glasses are separated with a space to create a room for the air. This retains the temperature, like a thermal insulator.
What are the benefits of double glazing?
Besides thermal insulation, double glazing has a host of other benefits such as:
- Reduction of noise:
Sound signals travel like waves. The energy hits the air molecules and other object and creates the vibration that makes us hear any sound. Noise is the unwanted sub-content of any sound. Glass panes can absorb sound or noise. So, when we install double glazed glass, the power of absorption also gets doubled. So does the varying thickness of glass. And if we laminate the panes, it will be more absorbing. Then the diffraction by the air gaps deduces the pitch of a sound. On the whole, 40dB sound can be reduced.
Reduction of condensation: In warm air, the molecule air droplets increase the moisture that causes water droplets in the cooler surface and we sweat due to the respiration process. In a double glazed window, the glass pane in contact with warm air stays warm and prevent air droplets. If we have any air conditioner inside our room, this helps a lot.
- Heat reduction:
The air gap plays the main role here. The heat hits the outer pane, and the air absorbs it, the inner pane cools the air and doesn’t let the heat inside of the room. When we put argon gas in the gap, it prevents heat from transferring on the other side of the window.
And in the same way, in winters, the cold air will not be able to enter our homes, and the warmth won’t be able to pass through. It’s an absolute win-win using a double glazed window for both winter and summer.
